IBM has just announced a joint venture with ESB for a pilot program in Ireland with 1,000 charging stations. Find out what this means for the future of electric car charging, flexibility of payments and the smart grid.

Electric car charging has never seemed simpler and easier to use, thanks to a joint venture between IBM and ESB ecars that will implement a fully integrated smarter charging system with approximately 1,000 public charging points throughout Ireland. This project will revolutionize electric car charging by allowing the vehicles, charging posts and energy retailers to share important energy and financial data facilitating charging anywhere. I met withClay Luthy, Global Distributed Energy Resource Leader at IBM to find out more about what the project means for future EV drivers.

NZ. It seems IBM wants to offer a robust backbone for both energy providers and retailers in order to facilitate seamless customer charging and understand the demand.

IBM. Yes, this is an inaugural project for IBM and ESB where we will test a flexible infrastructure for electric car charging. This will also address questions service providers and management companies have when it comes to user charging demands. For instance, IBM is writing the software to provide utilities, third parties and cities a better understanding of how, when and where an electric car driver charge. Retailers and utilities will be able to share a common platform for payment with user benefits, such as the ability for electric car drivers to bill their charging to their service providers, regardless of where they charge. It's a seamless system of sort that offers value added services with.

Read also:

IBM teams with ESB to develop an Electric Vehicle Smart Charging IT System in ... (Sacramento Bee)

IBM and ESB Make Important Progress on EV Smart Charging (AOL Energy)

IBM, ESB Launch 'Smarter' EV Charging System in Ireland (Environmental Leader)

Explore: 27 additional articles.
